Deputy Director
Opportunity
The Beverly Heritage Center is seeking a multi-talented individual to grow with our organization. This Deputy Director position will assist with wide responsibilities operating the Beverly Heritage Center Museum and our non-profit organizations, with flexibility to focus on areas that fit your expertise. Longer term, a successful individual in this job will be well positioned to move up to Executive Director position.
Background
The Beverly Heritage Center is a full-service museum and visitor center facility in Beverly, WV, operated through a partnership between Rich Mountain Battlefield Foundation and Historic Beverly Preservation. The Directors oversee and support operations for the Museum and partner organizations.
Position Duties
The Deputy Director responsibilities will include:
- Supporting operations of the Beverly Heritage Center and the partner organizations, including managing, sustaining, and promoting Beverly Heritage Center visitor services, events, programs, and projects
- Working closely with and supporting other staff, AmeriCorps members, and volunteers
Additional responsibilities will be assigned as appropriate from:
- Museum programming including collections management, exhibits, and interpretive activities
- Oversight of facilities, maintenance needs, and historic preservation for Beverly Heritage Center and the historic properties owned by the partner organizations.
- Marketing, promotion, communications, and outreach to increase tourism and build organizational support
- Assist with organizational administration and management, grant-writing, and fundraising
- Work with Directors and Board to help in setting priorities and the initiation of new projects
Qualifications
Degree in history, public administration, tourism, communications, or related field with at least two years of practical public history experience. Advanced degree is welcome. Extensive relevant experience may substitute. Applicants are encouraged who have experience in some aspects of the position duties, and who may have interest in gaining additional skills.
Skills should include:
- Responsible, self-directed, organized, competent, attention to detail
- Strong communication skills including written and oral communications, public speaking, and digital and technology competency.
- Work well with diverse people, including visitors, co-workers, and as a supervisor.
- Museum and/or interpretive background or experience, able to initiate and lead innovative programming
- Familiarity with buildings and landscape maintenance, and/or with historic preservation
- Ability to see the big picture, use long-term planning, and exercise vision and leadership, working in a team framework.
