DESCRIPTION:Blooming Adventures: Garden Stories Collected by and of Zora Neale Hurston is a special summer storytime presented by the Beverly Heritage Center in partnership with Elkins-Randolph Public Library’s  Beverly Heritage Branch! \n  \nBe inspired by a celebrated\, 20th-century artist\, Zora Neale Hurston. Her personal and collected stories spring with an appreciation for the natural world as a place full of wonder\, wisdom and adventures. Dig into Zora’s creative visionary legacy through folk narratives retold by Master Storyteller and Published Poet\, Diane Macklin. From dancing colors to arbor kinships\, these stories will delight any creative spirit\, wonder-full heart\, or vivid imagination! \n  \nMore about Diane Macklin \nDiane Macklin has dedicated over two decades to the art of storytelling and listening. She engages audiences with a dynamic\, theatrical style\, blended with her background in education\, dance and cultural mediation. She has performed from Massachusetts to California for venues such as: International Storytelling Center’s Exchange Place\, FL Storytelling Festival\, National Docent Symposium\, National Park Service\, various Smithsonian museums in DC\, plus a host of venues where people gather. Her published work has received honorable mention from the Passager Poetry Contest 2024. She is also the 2022 Speak Story Telling Series Commission recipient; 2018 winner of the Jackie Torrence Tall Tale Contest for the NABS’s Festival and Conference; and Taft Museum’s 2013 Robert S. Duncanson Artist-in-Residence.  Diane lives as a narrative enthusiast fully invested in the ancient power of storytelling to transform; heal; and explore the unique\, yet universal elements of humanity. As a performer\, workshop presenter\, key note speaker\, and teaching artist\, Diane aims to “Make a Difference\, One Story at a Time!”

SUMMARY:A Strawberry Celebration: Planting the Seed! Day 2: Dinner and Cooking Classes
DESCRIPTION:Join the Beverly Heritage Center in celebrating strawberries this spring! We in West Virginia love strawberries today\, but their importance in our region predate our festivals by a long while. Strawberries\, and the “wild” strawberry in particular\, are celebrated by the Indigenous people and communities who have lived in these mountains since time immemorial. \nWe welcome Chef Lorinda to Beverly to lead us in learning more about Seneca connections to the strawberry\, celebrating this first fruit of the spring. Chef Lorinda visits us from Cattaraugus Territory\, Seneca Nation. She is a Spring 2025 graduate of SUNY Buffalo’s Hospitality program\, and has presented her food and culture across the country\, including in Elkins\, WV in 2024. Chef Lorinda has partnered with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills as Hometown Chef\, and has an established private chef and meal prepping business. \n  \nOn Saturday evening\, May 31st\, Chef Lorinda will prepare a gourmet meal that highlights the magnificence of strawberries. This meal will be a ticketed event. \nReturn to the Beverly Heritage Center on Saturday for an afternoon and evening of celebrating the strawberry! \nChef Lorinda (Seneca) will prepare a strawberry-centered gourmet meal\, with a vegetarian option available. Using ingredients produced in West Virginia when possible\, John will demonstrate the connections that Indigenous communities have to this area\, and how local foodways have been shaped by these mountains. The multicultural meal will include ingredients familiar to Appalachian kitchens\, like maple syrup and sassafras\, and John will highlight their role in Haudenosaunee foodways\, medicine\, and cosmology. After dinner\, Chef Lorinda will lead an evening presentation about foodways and how her cooking is informed by traditional knowledge and practices. \nYearning for more learning? At 12pm and 3pm\, adults and teens over 15 years of age are invited to join Chef Lorinda earlier in the afternoon for a hands-on workshop and prep class. She will share some of her recipes\, and attendees will have a chance to learn from the Chef in a small group setting. Children will learn from Haudenosaunee stories about the wild strawberry\, the first fruit of the season\, and how it connects generations. Chef Lorinda (Seneca) and Beverly Heritage Center staff will lead experiential learning about cultivated strawberries through the Heritage Center’s interpretive garden\, where attendees will dig into soil\, touch and smell the growing plants\, and ultimately plant a seed to take home. Leave your mark! Youth will make fingerprint strawberries on canvases–some to take home\, and some for Strawberry Celebration dinner guests the following evening. Attendees will have the opportunity to try frybread\, a hallmark of contemporary Native American cuisine\, with fresh strawberry jam. \nThis free program will be outside\, weather-permitting. Guests of all ages are welcome\, but programming is tailored for elementary ages. A Window to Love Letters from the Past.” Words of Love is the newest exhibit in our Women’s Window\, featuring love letters\, poems\, dance photos and more from Beverly and all across Randolph County.\n\n\nFree to all\, we will serve hot cocoa and homemade cookies in the Heritage Center gallery. Additionally\, we will have paper and letter-writing materials for guests to craft their own love letters–who will you write to?\n\n\nThis window exhibit is visible from the outside of the building\, facing Court St.\, so dress according to the Wild & Wonderful weather we’ve been having.\n\nCan’t wait to see you there!\n\nThis exhibit is made possible through financial support of the Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area.

DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nCome on down to the backyard of the Logan House as we uncover history! \nThanks to a state grant\, the Beverly Landmarks Commission and the Rich Mountain Battlefield Foundation have hired AllStar Ecology\, a natural and cultural resources management firm to conduct a Phase I excavation on the Logan House property located at 831 Main Street in Beverly\, Randolph County\, West Virginia. \nFrom 9am to 4pm on Monday\, October 14\, the public is invited to visit and learn more about the history of this property as it sits within many thousands of years of human occupation. From its proximity to the historical Seneca Trail\, part of the deep network of trails engineered by Native communities in this area\, to its use as a hospital after the Battle of Rich Mountain in summer 1861\, this land has witnessed a lot! Join us as we uncover materials that might shed more light onto our rich and complex past. \nJust down the street from the Beverly Heritage Center\, we welcome visitors to park at the Center and walk the short distance along Walnut Street.
