Havelock – A Fleeting Fashion
By Grace Murphy, AmeriCorps Preservation Associate 2025-26 The havelock in the Beverly Heritage Center collection belonged to Hugh Patterson Boon. Mr. Boon enlisted with Company E 12th Pennsylvania Infantry on April 25, 1861 and mustered out on August 5, 1861. Two years later on September 1, 1863, he was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant of Company B, 1st West Virginia Cavalry, later becoming the captain. On April 6, 1865, he captured a flag at the Battle of Sailor’s Creek, the last major battle between the armies led by Generals Lee and Grant and the largest surrender of Confederate soldiers.1 Mr.…

Grayson Samples has been a WV performer for over 30 years. His style of Appalachian musical influences intertwine with other genres to create his own sound. With original music and many other styles, this show will leave you smiling and tapping your toes! Saturday, April 18th from 5:30-7:30 PM. Outdoors on the historic 1841 Jail House lawn (weather permitting). Rain venue is the Beverly IOOF Great Hall (across the street from the Beverly Heritage Center). Beverly Heritage Day 2026
Our biggest heritage event of the year, Beverly Heritage Day 2026 will focus on commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and our theme of “Building Beverly, Building the Nation” at the event on July 18th from 10 AM-5 PM. Beverly Heritage Day is free (except food and craft items for sale) but donations are appreciated. Fun and learning for all ages! Living history, primitive encampments, artisan demonstrations, educational lectures, live music, interactive games for kids, food vendors, Early Settler’s Reunion, and more.
